Lir National Ocean Test Facility - Qualisys Motion Capture system
The Lir National Ocean Test Facility (Lir NOTF), located in Ringaskiddy, Cork, is a state-of-the-art test site comprising of wave tank and electrical test infrastructure that allow scaled testing of marine devices and their integration to the electrical grid. The 2,600 m2 facility is part of the Marine and Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI) Centre. The MaREI Centre combines expertise from a wide range of research groups and industry partners from across Ireland, with the shared mission of solving the main scientific, technical and socio-economic challenges across the marine and renewable energy sectors.

OPIN Annual Symposium
On September 30, the Ocean Power Innovation Network (OPIN) will be holding the projects first OPIN Annual Symposium, taking place alongside the Ocean Energy Europe 2019 Conference in the Convention Centre Dublin. The Symposium will provide an opportunity for OPIN members to network and learn more about the supports available through the project. This includes a workshop on the development and application process for the Collaborative Innovation Groups support offered by the project.

MaRINET2 – 4th Funding Call Announced
MaRINET2, the Marine Renewables Infrastructure Network, today announced the launch of its forth call. MaRINET2 is a €10.5m project funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme, and coordinated by the MaREI (Marine and Renewable Energy Ireland) Centre in Ireland. The project aims to accelerate the development of offshore renewable energy technologies by providing free-of-charge access to a network of 57 research facilities across Europe. SmartBay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site, LIR National Ocean Test Facility and Queens University Testing Facilities are available for transnational access under this new call. On 21 December 2018 the Marine Institute launched the latest National Infrastructure Access Programme (NIAP). This programme is designed to fund access for small scale projects to the SmartBay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site infrastructure in Galway Bay or provide access to the data feeds from the test site.

The Marine Energy Alliance (MEA) is a 4 year European Territorial Cooperation project running from May 2018 to May 2022. The project has a total budget of €6 million and is finacially supported by Interreg North West Europe, who provides €3.6 million of ERDF funding.

Inauguration of the Lir National Ocean Test Facility
On January 1, the Lir National Ocean Test Facility (Lir-NOTF) will progress to the operational phase of its life cycle with the completion of three years of commissioning works. To celebrate this important milestone, Lir-NOTF will be hosting an official inauguration event on January 18 2019. The keynote speech will be delivered by an Tánaiste Simon Coveney TD, with Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys TD, the President of UCC Patrick O'Shea, the Lord Mayor of Cork and the Mayor of County Cork all in attendance. Representatives from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, who part funded the development of the facility, and leading industry partners from the ocean energy sector will also be in attendance.

Ireland is actively committed to harnessing its abundant marine renewable energy resources and is dedicated to developing an indigenous ocean energy industry in the process. The MaRINET2 project will open a call for applications on the 1st November 2018. Successful applicants will receive free access to a world-leading network of testing and research infrastructures. The call is open to offshore energy technology developers, including wind, wave and tidal energy at system and component level. Deadline for application is on the 15th December 2018.

International Conference on Ocean Energy (ICOE) 2018

Offshore Renewable Energy Development Plan Interim Review Report
On May 18th the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) published the interim review of the Offshore Renewable Energy Development Plan (OREDP). The aim of the interim review is to assess the progress to date on the key policy actions set out in the OREDP. The review also identifies the challenges that have emerged since the reports publication. The DCCAE established an Oversight Group to guide the interim review. The group included representatives from the DCCAE, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), and the offshore renewable energy (ORE) industry.
