Marine Renewable Energy Ireland MaREI is a marine and energy-based research, development and innovation hub based in Ireland. MaREI combines the expertise of a wide range of research groups and industry partners, with the shared mission of solving the main scientific, technical and socio-economic challenges across the marine and energy spaces.

Central MaREI operations are administered from the Beaufort Building in Cork Harbour, which also houses the LIR National Ocean Test Facility, while our research team comprises internationally recognised experts in these fields from University College Cork (UCC), National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), University Limerick (UL), Maynooth University (MU), University College Dublin, (UCD) and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), who have complementary research backgrounds key to providing the underpinning research necessary for Ireland to achieve commercially successful marine and energy industries.

MaREI delivers tailored technological solutions to companies through its industry-led research programme, providing innovative solutions that reduce the time to market, and reduce costs to a competitive level.

MaREI’s research programme covers a wide range of cross-cutting topics across the marine and energy spaces, including aspects such as device design and modelling, energy conversion and storage, novel materials and structural testing, energy policy and modelling, operations support and environmental monitoring. In addition to facilitating fundamental research activities, the research programme is closely aligned to the needs of industry partners, and addresses the real needs of both the companies involved, and the marine and energy sectors as a whole.

Through their involvement in MaREI, each of its Partners is exposed to cutting-edge research developments and innovations across the marine and energy spaces, and interaction with other MaREI Partner Companies can lead to significant synergies and cross-fertilisation of ideas. In this regard, MaREI provides a one-stop shop for industry to carry out research and development activities, and the possibility to generate strategic relationships that open doors to new opportunities and into new sectors.

Each of MaREI’s academic partners has developed state-of-the-art facilities to carry out world-class research in their respective focus areas across the marine and energy fields. In combining these distributed facilities, MaREI facilitates multi-disciplinary collaboration and knowledge sharing between each of the centres, and provides a clear access point for marine and energy research in Ireland. These facilities cater for a wide spectrum of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), accommodating a wide range of prototype scales and specifications. Facilities within MaREI include the LIR National Ocean Test Facility (LIR-NOTF), Structural Research Laboratory, Coastal Observing Radar System (CODAR), Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station, and Marine Robotics Research Centre (MRRC).

MaREI is an Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI) centre with additional funding coming from a number of sources, including SEAI, Enterprise Ireland (EI), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), European Union (EU), Higher Education Authority (HEA) and Irish Research Council of Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET), as well as through contributions from our industry partners.
