Biosphere Reserves
Cultural Heritage
The objective of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation type was to combine nature conservation with sustainable development, to create a worldwide network for research, environmental education and training. In the 1970’s UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) through its ‘Man and the Biosphere (M.A.B) Programme’, created the Biosphere Reserve concept to formally recognise areas that achieve a balance between the protection of significant ecosystems and surrounding development. Biosphere Reserves do not have any legal standing, it is assumed by UNESCO that countries will take measures to protect designated sites by other protection means, such as - Special Amenity Zoning in Development Plans, S.A.A.O’s, Statutory Nature Reserves etc. Biosphere Reserves are not supposed to be strict nature reserves per se. The main objective is to facilitate sustainable development within certain zones defined as ‘Core Zones’ for nature conservation and adjoined by ‘Buffer and Traditional Zones’ to facilitate sustainable development and farming practices respectively. By 1994 Ireland had designated two sites (North Bull Island 1981 and Killarney National Park 1982). The MAB international Council at its 17th session on the 18th to the 22nd of March 2002 formulated ‘Guiding Principles’ on the creation and maintenance of Biosphere Reserves in their objective to meet conservation, sustainable development and scientific co-operation.

Census 2011 Grid Dataset
Population and Human Health
Census 2011 was the first time where each household and dwelling was linked to spatial coordinates, thereby offering greater flexibility in relation to the production of geographical outputs. The result of this linkage means that grid cells of equal size can be used to disseminate data from the 2011 census. The advantages of grids are that they offer independence from existing administrative boundaries (which can facilitate cross-border analysis) and provide a better representation of the spatial distribution of the population.

National Parks
Cultural Heritage
In 1969, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recommended that all governments agree to reserve the term 'National Park' to areas sharing the following characteristics: Where one or several ecosystems are not materially altered by human exploitation and occupation; where plant and animal species, geomorphological sites and habitats are of special scientific, educational and recreational interest or which contain a natural landscape of great beauty; Where the highest competent authority of the country has taken steps to prevent or eliminate as soon as possible exploitation or occupation in the whole area and to enforce effectively the respect of ecological, geomorphological or aesthetic features which have led to its establishment; Where visitors are allowed to enter, under special conditions, for inspirational, educational, cultural and recreational purposes. It is the policy of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, endorsed by successive governments, to abide by the criteria and standards for National Parks as set by the IUCN.

OSPAR Marine Protected Area (MPA)
Biodiversity
Within OSPAR, MPAs are understood as areas for which protective, conservation, restorative or precautionary measures have been instituted for the purpose of protecting and conserving species, habitats, ecosystems or ecological processes of the marine environment. At the Ministerial Meeting in Sintra in 1998, OSPAR Ministers agreed to promote the establishment of a network of marine protected areas and, following a period of preparatory work, the 2003 OSPAR Ministerial Meeting in Bremen adopted Recommendation 2003/3 on a network of marine protected areas with the purpose of establishing an ecologically coherent network of MPAs in the North-East Atlantic that is well managed by 2016.The OSPAR network of MPAs aims: to protect, conserve and restore species, habitats and ecological processes which have been adversely affected by human activities; to prevent degradation of, and damage to, species, habitats and ecological processes, following the precautionary principle; to protect and conserve areas that best represent the range of species, habitats and ecological processes in the maritime area.

Seafloor Geology
Soil and Sediment
EMODnet seafloor geology data has been compiled by adapting Irish geological seafloor data at domain level to harmonized pan European data models depicting Sea floor Lithology/Age. Data displays the Pre Quaternary seabed geology of Irelands offshore, within the EMODNET boundary (based on Irelands EEZ) plus a 75Km buffer zone at a scale of 1:1Million. The seabed geology and contacts have been inferred by integrating a combination of geological and geophysical data and publications. The structural geology has been provided courtesy of Irelands Petroleum Affairs Division. A comprehensive attribute table has been compiled for age and lithology attribution, in which further detail can be found. This; 1:1 Million Geological Map of the Pre-Quaternary marine bedrock of Ireland has been compiled as part of the Irish obligation to the EMODNET project, WP4 Sea floor Geology.

Small Area Population Maps (SAPMAP)
Population and Human Health
SAPMAP is a mapping application developed by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). It allows users to access SAPS through an interactive map search. SAPMAP allows users to navigate to their location of interest by using the address search facility. Users can then select the geographic boundary (layer) of interest and access all of the 2011 Census tables that have been produced for that area.

Special Area of Conservation (SAC)
Cultural Heritage
These are prime wildlife conservation areas in the country, considered to be important on a European as well as Irish level. Most Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are in the countryside, although a few sites reach into town or city landscapes, such as Dublin Bay and Cork Harbour. Detailed conservation objectives are available for some SACs and as additional ones are approved they will be posted on the NPWS website (www.npws.ie). The legal basis on which SACs are selected and designated is the EU Habitats Directive, transposed into Irish law in the as amended in 1998 and 2005. The Directive lists certain habitats and species that must be protected within SACs
